First-Year Students

First-year students at the University Park campus may be admitted for a summer start. Students admitted for a fall start can also elect to change their start term to the summer in order to take summer courses. If you have questions about your admission to the university for summer, please contact Undergraduate Admissions by emailing admissions@psu.edu or calling 814-865-5471.

First-year students who begin during the summer session will take two courses (6 or 7 credits) toward their degree requirements during summer session II. For summer 2025, classes begin on Wednesday, July 2 and final exams are Friday, August 15. While the final arrival date has not yet been set, students should plan to be available to move in to their residence hall room the weekend prior to the start of classes.

For their summer courses, first-year students have the option of either taking their courses through the Learning Edge Academic Program (LEAP) or by selecting two courses from the general offerings for summer session II.  You can learn more about the LEAP program by clicking on the links in the left-side menu of this page. Students who elect to participate in LEAP should follow the registration steps listed in the left-side menu. Students who elect not to participate in LEAP will register for their summer classes during New Student Orientation. To learn more about New Student Orientation, visit orientation.psu.edu
